Is your Skincare Stale?

Is your Skincare Stale?

How old is the skincare product you just purchased off the shelf at Nordstroms? The answer is it is very hard to find out. You can take the Lot # and plug it into checkcosmetic.net to determine the manufacture date of your skincare product.  Expiration dates of most skincare is generally accepted to be 2.5-3.0 years, varying depending on the type of product and the packaging.  Expiration dates are based on the Shelf Life of a product.  The Shelf Life is very crude and only means that it’s the length of time you can expect a product to look and act as it should.  This definition is very  vague. First off, Vitamin C will break down in 2-3 months regardless of the formulation so how can 3 years be the accepted expiration date.  It wont hurt you if you use it prior to the 3 year expiration is basically what these dates mean.

There are no US Law or regulation requiring cosmetics to have specific Shelf Lives or Expiration dates on their label.  It’s the manufacturer’s responsibility to determine these dates based on their own stability testing, but the aren’t required to show these dates on the skincare products or disclose their testing or tracking information to the FDA.  As a consumer, you would have to contact the cosmetic company and get those answers.

Since China manufactures most, if not all, of the major skincare lines, by the time a product even reaches a retail shelf it can be 6 months or more. Anti-oxidants like Vitamin C lose their potency very quickly within several months regardless of when you open the product.  Water and time will degrade everything with time regardless of how well they are sealed or how many preservatives are in them.  Retinol products lose their potency within 6 months.  So, basically by the time you receive your antiaging product the actives within the product no longer are potent and in most cases broken down completely. The product is safe for use though for up to 2.5-3.0 years.  For antiaging skincare a 3 year expiration date is unacceptable.
